To celebrate the many values of McIntyre Creek, CPAWS Yukon and partner organizations are hosting an outdoor event called “Backyard Biodiversity at Chasàn Chùa” on July 24th, 2021, 11 am to 3 pm, at the Pumphouse Pond near Yukon University. The Town Hall is free to Putah Creek Council members and open to the public. Marovich will conclude the talk with a brief insight into the Lower Putah Creek Coordinating Committee and the overall goals for salmon recovery along the creek now and into the future. Miner will summarize the five years’ worth of salmon monitoring data collected from adult carcass surveys and rotary screw trap operation. Moyle will kick off the Salmon Town Hall by giving an overview on the history of Putah Creek with insight into the Putah Creek Accord and its consequences on the creek.
Key to this success was the willing partnership of the Solano County Water Agency with PCC and others who cared about the creek. The return of salmon to the creek was a surprising indicator of the creek’s recovery. The Putah Creek Accord resulted in Putah Creek becoming a living stream supporting native fishes and riparian habitat for wildlife. A lawsuit led to a trial in 1996 and a settlement agreement in 2000. Drought conditions dried up the creek at a time when there was growing interest in its restoration.
